Objective:
Given teacher input, various resources on life cycles, class discussions, and a partner, the learner will know and understand that a) living organisms have reoccurring life cycles and b) life cycle vocabulary by completing a Quizlet of important vocabulary words and illustrating life cycles with 100% accuracy.
Anticipatory Set:
The teacher will have different life cycles displayed on the ActiveBoard. Ask students what they know about plants? Ask them if they have a garden? If they do, ask them if they grow vegetables or plants if their garden? Students will write their answers in their science journals.
Teacher Input:
Read aloud A Tiny Seed by Eric Carle and discuss the stages of a plant's life cycle. Show the two PowerPoints listed below and facilitate class discussion about plant and animal life cycles. Questions:
1. Think in your head - Is there any living organism (animal or plant) that does not have a life cycle?
2. Share with your partner - Discuss the important stages of all life cycles. When do life cycles end?
3. Journaling - What happens if a life cycle is interrupted, for instance when a mother bird is killed?
Guided Practice:
As a class, watch the BrainPop, Jr. video (listed below) and take the life cycle quiz together.
Independent Practice:
1. Students will go to Quizlet.com and create a set of vocabulary cards focusing on vocabulary words introduced in life cycles unit. Students can work independently or in pairs. A sample of Quizlet cards is posted below.
2. Students can use the "Study" or "Games" views.
Closure:
Students share with a partner three things they learned today. Call on random students to share out what their partner told them.
Assessment:
Students complete the interactive assessment "Cycles of Life" listed below.
Extension:
Students, using Photo Story 3, will produce a plant log to document their plant's growth over time. Using Tech4Learning.com ,students will determine the rubric used for their Plant Log.
